they are having meetings, giving information out to the congess and information on development in the domestic and international markets to industry interests, the general public, and the news media. In addition, AWEA publishes the only weekly newsletter devoted to wind energy news. Every year, AWEA hosts WINDPOWER, the largest wind energy conference in North America. The conference provides presentations that highlight the latest industry trends, technology developments, and renewable energy policy developments. WINDPOWER also provides unmatched access to wind industry businesses and technology leaders.
4. How can you relate their work to the Girls Club building project? I think this work is relating to the girls club because the Girls club is trying to use things over and over, and not use so much poulltion.

What's up! Thanks for going to the Earth Pledge meeting last week. This week you will be back in the office with John Waters. You can work with him. If you have free time, you can check on the web sites.
I have a question you can work on with John.... since you have been working on the project for almost a year, how have the plans for the Girls Club facility changed and evolved? let me know what you think.
For the summer, do you want to work with us this summer at the Farmer's Market, Green Roof Model for a few hours each Saturday. You could work... June 28th-Oct. 25th at the market, on Saturdays, if you want. Let me know.
Jennifer!

1. Write a brief summary of the the "group's mission" in your own words. what is it trying to accomplish?
Sustainable: Architecture, Building, and culture is trying to develop a community of environmentally conscious citizens. It is also trying to connect the public and the professionals in the fields of sustainable construction, architecture and environmental protection with each other. (It also wants to develop tools for environment professionals to network with each other.
2. what are some serious problems according to this organization (if there are any?)
One of the serious problems this organization has is making people environmentally aware of the environment. Many poeple don't sense the urgency of keeping the environement safe.
3. What are they doing to addresss the problems?
They constantly stress the need for people to become aware of the environment we live in. They hold lectures and train others on how they can get the word out there.
4. How can you relate their work to the Girls Club building project?
The Sustainable: Architecture, Buiding, and Culture organization is much like the Girls Club because it contines to remain environmentally conscious through their building projects.

Thursday was a car trip to East Hampton to visit the Ross School. Jennifer, Lynn, and the Sweet things Master baker went to visit the school for ideas on how to design the Girls Club building. They asked me to come along because the next stop on my internship journey is to the architect’s office.
The Ross School is a green school, and was started about 6 years ago by a mother who was unsatisfied with the school that her fifth grade daughter was attending, so she decided to start her own school. The school started out with two students in the fifth grade and has now grown to a 6-12th grade school with 250, with plans for 50 more students next year and so on. It’s a private school and tuition is 11 thousand dollars a year but about 50% of the student body is receiving some form of financial aid.
The school building itself is amazing. It is the most remarkable school or building in general that I have ever seen. The campus consists of 6 buildings, each with its own purpose, but we were only able to visit the Wellness Center. The building doesn’t look special from the outside, but once inside it’s a completely different story. At the entrance, we were asked to take our shoes off and the tour guide handed us slippers. Turns out, none of the students or staff is allowed with shoes in that building, only slippers (with the exception of dance, gym students, and the kitchen staff).
The design of the building is a mix of ancient African designs with bamboo ceilings and wood floors. The amazing thing is, the building was built with earth safe materials. There are also libraries all over, each section pertaining to the center that it’s in. In that particular building, there were sports books, yoga, and just general health and nutrition books.
The Wellness Center had a mediation room (the first one I ever saw), a dance studio, a gym which could also convert to an auditorium, and a cafeteria (which looked like those you would find in restaurants). The building also has bathrooms which are nicer then most peoples home ones, a pond with fish and a waterfall, and a huge restaurant style kitchen. The food that they use to serve comes from neighboring farms, and everything they purchase is either organic, in season (unless the produce was bought while in season and frozen by them), or freshly cooked.
The cafeteria offers a variety of food, from vegan to meat meals, although meat is almost never the main meal. They have a pizza oven in the cafeteria and you can pick your own toppings and it’s made right there in front of you. It was amazing.
That’s how school should be centered, not just because of the food (although that was a wonderful tasting) but around the complete wellbeing of students and teachers. If we were all more relaxed, or ate healthier, I think we’d be able to work and learn so much better. I hope that the Girls Club being built will follow a building structure close to that, I know it’s expensive but the payoffs would be greater. If the cost it too much for the budget, any building that follows the principle of the inhabitants well being will be beneficial.

While we were in Washington, we went to visit the "Big and Green" exhibit at the National Building Museum. This exhibit was on alternative building structures that are more environmentally conscious and could be used in cities. The exhibit had actual buildings and plans for building on display in order to prove the point that better building methods are possible and work. These were divided into five categories, Energy, Light and Air, Greenery Water and Waste, Construction, and Urbanism.
For the energy section, buildings which create their own sources of energy were on display. Some buildings were built in order to catch passing wind currents to make energy for the building. Others had sun panels to capture energy from the sun. They even had a model of how many windmills it would take to power an entire city, and it's a field of windmills. But it would be worth it though to build.
The next section was titled "Light and Air.” The buildings on display in this exhibit would be ideal to live in because access to sunlight was one of the main factors kept in mind while during their design. Not only was light a huge factor, but also temperature. Those buildings had special windows which would capture heat in the winter, but keep cool in the summer. With each of those exhibits, they provided huge panel with drawing explaining how each feature on the building worked.
The next section was called Greenery Water and Waste, the buildings in this section almost all had plants. There was one building on which each balcony had a small set of trees to capture water, keep the air fresh, and filter the captured water. I never thought that thick greenery could be incorporated into a building structure, not just on the roof, and function to help the building and its' inhabitants. One thing I wondered though was with all those plants, would the architects develop something to keep the insects they would attract outside the building?
The next section was titled Construction and was about the way that current buildings are built. It showed some green buildings which were rebuilt into the frame of old buildings in order to save materials. But the building that amazed me the most was a building which could be built in a short amount of time, I think it was less then a month, and could be lived in by people. But the outer shell of was make out of some cloth, the model looked like a spiders web, and it had to be supported by trucks at the base. The purpose, as was explained, was to design a building which could be built in a short period of time in case of a natural disaster which wiped out other buildings.
The last section was titled Urbanism which focused not on buildings only, but the cities which the buildings would make. It stressed the importance of keeping the environment in mind when designing cities. Overall, it was a really good exhibit, and also to keep in the context of the exhibits subject, the paper used to display the information was all recycled. Even the cardboard wall used to separate the sections was recycled. I would highly recommend this exhibit to other people.
hey internees.
i reckon that there was some confusion over the new work days. You will be working Thursdays now at the builders, because that is when John Waters will be in the office. What is going to be happening, is that one week one of you will be doing research on the office computers, while the other one will be working with John and then we will switch off the next week and so forth. John thinks that it is better to work one on one with the interns, and it is just as well because it is now time for you research projects to get started. You will be working at the Builder's office until May 29th and your final projects are due June 20th. For the research you will be doing book reviews for one book and two web pages. i am in the process of ordering the books for you, so when they come in you can both come to the office to pick them up and i will go over how to "review" the books in person. they are cool "green building" books so it should be interesting!
ok.
this is a lot if info, so email me and let me know you got it all!
