Building Community Meeting
Earth Pledge: December 10, 2002
Participants: Jennifer Sugg
Dave Pentecost
Jason Lee-intern
Norma Martinez –intern
Topics Discussed:
Waste Management-(Jason’s topic) Anaerobic Digestion, where by food waste is converted into Bio Gas that can be used in the same ways that Natural Gas is used. It can also be used to fuel, fuel cells, which serve as an alternative energy source. The amount of energy (in the form of bio gas) produced by an anaerobic digester depends on the amount of food waste. Thus, more food waste yields more energy. The Girls Club Café and commercial kitchen could contain an anaerobic digester to convert food waste into biogas as a supplemental energy resource offsetting the cost of electricity and natural gas. Another benefit is that you are dealing with the food waste internally without exporting it at a cost per pound. The new green Apartments in Battery Park City contain anaerobic digesters to create biogas, which cleans the black water. This form of waste management is common in Europe, but has not caught on in the US where landfill costs are much lower. Earth Pledge assists helps organizations in the city find the financial resources to fund anaerobic digestion system in their buildings. It supports the organizations and educates the public.
Aside from Anaerobic digestion, Earth Pledge asserts that it is important to incorporate a green, earth friendly mindset in occupants of the building. Because there are no city recycling plans in place, any recycling would have to be set up with corporations in need to the materials. (ex. Park Slope Co-op, has a recycling program set up with businesses that use the materials). Earth Pledge also suggested that it would be interested in developing a curriculum for the school that occupies the building, which could be use the building as an example from which to learn.
Alternative Building Materials/Resources- (Norma) Earth Pledge stresses the Green Roofing initiative. A green roof will significantly offset cooling costs (varying with the size of the building). It also offers insulation in the winter. It lasts for 30years, twice as long as normal roofs, which saves money. When combined with a good window system, green roofs can be very efficient, and an effective means of saving money in the long run.
Green buildings in general are more 10-15% more expensive to construct, but the added costs should saved within 5-10 years.
