Bandwidth Chart

Sorry, I guess there was a change of plans. I'll show you the photo uploading soon.

Meanwhile, I am posting a chart of Internet bandwidth (Click MORE to see it). This shows the types of internet connections that can be put into the building, and how much information each one carries. The abbreviations show information in bits per second or bps. Kbps means kilobits per second, or thousands of bits. Mbps means megabits per second, or millions of bits. And Gbps means, you guessed it, BILLIONS of bits per second - Gigabits.

If we want to give everyone in the building, and many people in the neighborhood, a high-speed internet connection (100k-1Mbps) we need a big connection. I think it's a T3 or more. What do you think?

Internet Bandwidth Chart

DS0 64kbps Building Block for Fractional T1

T1, DS-1 1.544Mbps

T2, DS-2 6.312Mbps

T3 or DS3 44.736Mbps 672 DS0s

OC-1, STS1 51.840Mbps Optical Fiber

Fast Ethernet 100.00 Mbps LAN/WAN

OC-3, STS3 155.520Mbps Optical Fiber; 3 x 51.840Mbps

OC-3c 155.520Mbps Optical Fiber; "c"= concatenated

OC-12, STS12 622.080Mbps Optical Fiber

OC-48 2.488Gbps Optical Fiber
OC-96 4.976Gbps
OC-192 10Gbps
OC-255 13.21Gbps

2nd visit to the builder's office

On Thursday, we met with Carly at the builder’s office. First, we discussed about having a project manager. She told us, that it was very expensive, but could help this project run more smoothly, and rapidly. Even though, we are meeting all the deadlines on time!

Then, we briefly looked through the list of quantities and costs of the materials that will be needed to build the building. The list was an estimation. On the list there was, stated the amount of doors, windows, toilets, sinks, etc. that will be needed and how much it would cost (in all) to buy these materials. After that, we had a small discussion about where we could get our funding from. Carly thought that maybe if we could find out who supports the boys club financially, and ask those people is they are interested in funding for our project, we just might get some funding. Then, we went over some basic but important facts, we should know, about the project.
For example:
The block number- 377
The lot numbers- 35, 41, 42, 43, 47, and 48. (6 lots in all)
The footprint- 15,000 ft.
and...
what EDC stands for- Economic development corporation. The people who are EDC, are the people who we negotiate with, financially. We negotiate over costs and prices. Also,
we learned what the estimated cost of the building was in the year 2000- which was 11.9 million dollars.
Now the estimated cost is 20 million dollars. These simple facts could help us sounds more intelligent and organized when we do any presentations.

A Map of the Site

I have put a link to a map of the site and the Projects, in the link section on this main log index page. Thanks to Mick Pentecost for his help at the Cooper Union library. The scale is a little line at the bottom of the map. It represents 240 feet.

update 7/1/02

First, I wanted to thank everyone for you entries.....you have made very insightful comments that demonstrate how much you are learning...despite what you may think. Will you have done a particularly good job at conceptualizing and articulating the larger process of the building project. Norma...i really appreciate your quesitions and outlines. Dianna, you have done great with your daily entries. and Silvan, thank you for your summary of the architect's day....i hope to be seeing more of you on the web log!!!
Secondly, i want to encourage everyone to be reading your peers logs. you are all saying important and interesting things and you can tell that some of you pick up on different things during the meetings. So Please!!! read the logs.
Third.... I would like some more answers to the questions that i posted (thank you will and norma for the head start). I will be checking this week for them.
Fourth...I have a notebook of summer readings i have collected for you to complete over the next month. it is not too much, dont worry. i will be making a study guide for each chapter, and i expect to see updates and input from you all on the web log!
Fifth... I have given you excerpts from the books. if you want the entire book to read, let me know and you can borrow a copy from me. i would be happy to meet anytime to discuss the reading in person, over cofffee or something. let me know what you want to do.
You need to come by the office this week or on Monday July 8th to pick up the readings. ok! call and tell me when 982-1577.

Additional comments and questions....

1. How will Local Law 11 affect the Girls Club (see Silvans comments)?
2. According to Norma's comments about the meeting with Carrie and Catherine form the Community Health Care Network...... the questions we now have are who will be served by the Health Clinic in the building? What will the hours be? What services will be provided in the Clinic? (we dont have the answers yet, but i want your input....as to what the answers should be).
3. Dianna comments about the builders office day.....What things would you all like to change about the building plans...What would you keep the same?
4. When will the Borings be done and who will be doing this? why is it important (see wills comments).?
