Las niñas estan escribiendo sobre la visita de museo de insectos

María Mercedes Jiménez Sántiz Al estar ahi en el museo de Bichos e Insectos tuvimos una platica con el entomologo y nos enseño cosas que nosotros no sabiamos despues de la platica recorrimos el espacio y el entomologo nos dejo tocar a una tarantula, un grillo y una cucaracha al pasar eso habia variedades de animales lo que mas me mas gusto fue las mariposas disecadas de diferetes colores y formas que dan una hermosidad precoisisima, recomendó que si nos vamos en un campo o en un lugar lleno de mariposa seria un sueño como en los escarabajos y las Tarantulas tanto venenosas y no venenosas tienen un gran significado para el ser humano y no solo estos animalitos si no que todos los animales que algunos no conocemos todavía.

Laura Sántiz Díaz me gustaron mucho los bichos porque son muy bonitos como las arañas, los bichos, escarabajos, ronron, grillos, escorpiones y en especial las mariposas todas las animales me gustaron, antes de ver a los animales el entomologo nos hicieron algunas preguntas y nosotras respondimos. Luego el entomologo lo puso en su mano una tarantula.

Margarita Sántiz Gómez Cuando fuimos al museo de insectos, vi los bichos e insectos fue totalmente hermoso y lo que mas me gusto fue el Escarabajo y el Ronron. El Escarabajo tiene cuernos y hermosas alas, el Entomologo nos dijo que hay que concervar el medio ambiente, porque si talamos muchos arboles, los animales se acaban y a nosotros nos morimos, por que las plantas nos dan el oxigeno que respiramos.

What is Beauty? Worldwide Ideals

We researched beauty around the world, and what we found was alarming. There are so many procedures, surgeries, lotions and creams, make-up and products of all kind made to make us look “ideal”. In history we found that there have been even more horrible ideas on how to make on beautiful. Why do people conform? We made a list of what is perceived as beautiful in other countries and what we thought of it.

We then decided to experiment with the “ideal” features. Obviously not everyone can pull off the “perfect look”. Luckily, we think we are beautiful the way we naturally are.

America considers . . .

-small waist

-tall

-skinny

-light skin

-big and colorful eyes

-big breasts

-clear and bright skin

-tan skin

-hairless

beautiful.

In other countries light skin are preferred. In one country Mauritania being bigger is considered better. In China having small feet is better and was once achieved through foot binding. Also being taller is better. There is a painful procedure that costs a lot. It is done by breaking the leg bone and lengthening it. Also I think that it is funny that in America being tan is preferred but people are being photoshopped lighter on magazine. People who are naturally darker aren’t considered as beautiful. Shouldn’t be this way.

Things that are “beautiful” in The United States:

Skinny and petite
Being young
Straight hair
Clear Skin
Tall
Light-colored
White and tan not dark and tanned
Different colored eyes rather than brown
Small waist
Big bust and butt
Thin legs

I never agreed with this because not everyone is like that. Many people have to work hard to look like this. Either starve themselves or throw up after. In many other countries, it’s different. In Africa, they force feed them because it’s beautiful to be big. But, in Brazil it’s beautiful for women to have the “guitar” shape. Which is thin, big breasts, and butt. This thought must change because then men begin to think this way and only see that as beautiful. When a woman has a heathy body and is great personality wise, she is the definition of beauty. No woman should be penalized or looked down upon just because her breasts aren’t a Double D or her stomach has a small pouch. Just because she isn’t almost six feet and the color of paper doesn’t mean she isn’t beautiful. A woman can have thick thighs and still be beautiful.
So with China portraying women as something that requires them to be tall, white, and with straight hair. They feel they need to bleach their skin to be close to white. This increasing to develop skin cancer or any other skin diseases. Being tall requires painful surgery that doesn’t even make them that tall. Only from about six inches to a foot. And straightening your hair to be perfectly straight can harm their hair and scalp. None of these things are heathy.

When I saw the video about this family in Jamaica who bleach their own skin, I felt disgusted because someone did that knowing it can affect your skin. That it can damage. I was also disgusted learning that in China they would damage their feet, skin, eyes and hair too. To me, it seems so horrifying. Solo porque esta de moda! >:(

In our What is Beauty class today, we discussed average size, plus size and real size. We read an article about a model in Glamour who got a lot of extra attention for not being the usual super thin model. We also watched a clip where models who have “out grown” the typical model look to become real sized models. Real size, that’s what we are.

We then drew ourselves a we imagine ourselves. When we finished we got to compare our ideas on what we look like with what we actually look like. Some of us thought we were thinner or bigger than we actually are, or thought our features were more “troublesome” than others might have thought. At the end, we decided that yes, beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.

What is plus size?

It is considered “plus size” and why do they call it that?

It should be called “normal size” because everyone isn’t less than a size six. Seen the Victoria’s Secret models? They’re scary skinny. I don’t find it attractive at all. I don’t understand why men have to like that and thus, why women think they need to be skinny. Women should just be regular size and eat whatever they want. I know girls who have pictures as “thinspirations” and makes them feel bad because they think they need to be that size. They don’t need to be that size, they’re beautiful just the way you are. I don’t understand why they never see it and I keep having to remind them. Just because you have a stomach, it doesn’t matter.

Today in What is Beauty we watched a part of the Ellen Show talking about plus size model. I was shocked that the model industry and the media in general view plus size as size 6 and above, which was shocking to me because most normal people in the world are size six and above. It is not fair for the women!!!!! what is plus size?!! plus size is normal size!! it is regular size! I remember my friend telling me that when she go to normal clothes stores her size was a 0 but when she go to a designer store she is a size 7!! what is the point of this? what are you trying to say about women. That women have to starve themselves to fit into some clothes and for others to call you skinny?!!! Noooo this is unacceptable!!! this is not right! The modeling industry is just so messed up!! Even though there is improvement in the world today, many modeling company start to use “plus size” models. It is because of these ideas that makes women feel horrible about themselves when they are actually normal, they are in reality pretty.

The average model size cuts off at a size 6. This is scary to me, because when I saw a woman with a little bit of fat, I thought she would still be a regular model. However she was considered to be a plus size model. I don’t like how designers would design clothes that are made for extremely unhealthy woman, that makes models want to starve themselves to be able to fit into a dress that determines their career’s future. I think there should be designers that designs clothes for healthy women, for both big and small. There should be more diversity when it comes to weight in the fashion industry.

Today in What is Beauty?

What I don’t like about the fashion industry is that they make clothes size small. With the, the woman and girls see these and would make them feel bad about themselves. They make themselves say may horrible things too. So I think that the media should stop what they are doing because what they are doing is making the woman and girls sick. Beauty is what you are inside and what you are inside.

I think that there is no such thing as a normal size because every one is born in a different size. some may be thin or big when they are young, but their matabolism changes. so nobody should really say what a real normal size is, but every one has their own opinion!! i do think that any other person other than a model has a 00 size except for little kids.

Casa Las Flores: Tri-lingual language classes and more….

Over the past few weeks at Casa de Las Flores, we have been leading and participating in “tri-lingual language classes” in Spanish, English, and Tzotzil. We are infusing our English lessons with our own studies in Spanish and Tzotzil to break down the student-teacher hierarchy: we are all students and all of our are teachers. Besides learning basic grammar and useful phrases, we use fun activities to “trick” ourselves into learners: translating AC/DC lyrics into all three languages, playing hangman and original games with flashcards and visual pictures, recording small skits in different languages, and making banners that read ” Bienvenidos a Casa De Las Flores/ Lek ti la Vulik Xae Sna Nimichik/Welcome to the Flower House!”

Beats sitting at a desk for 40 minutes while Ms. Johnson makes you recite the rules of past participle over and over!! And if school wasn’t fun enough, we also know how to reward ourselves with cool activities after class, like making planters out of recycled detergent containers

and, of course, playing futbol (not football)!! Que le vaya bien everyone!

Club Balam’s young photographers!

This past week in Club Balam we have been focusing on photography. Our girls and boys have been using photography as a way to provide insight into their lives. Some choose to take a week and provide evidence of their daily routine while others choose to take pictures of what characterized themselves through showing what their likes and dislikes.This week was our first week of truly exploring our cameras and the technology behind them. We got to practice our new found skills in a trip to the zoo, next week will be providing a chance for the girls and boys to edit their own photos for their first presentation which will be show cased on girlsclubworldwide.org !!

Hay me nuevamente, Jennifer. Nuestra clase de foto caminó por la calle a un pequeño parque de la Comunidad, donde tomamos fotos de uno a otro.

La escultura gráfica que usted ve esta hecha de metal. Tomamos una foto de ellas porque se veia muy interesante. Por ejemplo, las formas que han sido puesto y diseños que estaban echas son lindos. Las muchachas se divertieron mucho, nosotros sólo (justo) le deseamos que estaban aquí. ^_^ ¡ Besos!
